Indore people beware! If you give alms, you will be jailed for one year and will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.
Indore administration has taken an important step to free the city from beggary. Under this new step, a legal ban has now been imposed on giving alms to beggars and buying any goods from them. On Friday, officials also made it clear that if anyone is found violating this rule, legal action will be taken against him.
District Magistrate Ashish Singh has issued this order under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023. This order states that, “Any form of begging is completely prohibited. Giving alms to beggars or buying any goods from them will be a crime.” Under this order, if any person is found giving alms to beggars or buying goods from them, legal action will be taken against him.
On violation of this order, an FIR will be registered under Section 223 of the Indian Justice Code. If someone is found guilty, he can be punished with imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to ₹ 5,000 or both. This step has been taken to eliminate beggary in the city. The administration has decided to implement it seriously.
Will get reward for giving information about beggary
Officials also said that the person who gives correct information about beggary will be given a reward of ₹ 1,000 as incentive. The objective of this scheme is to make citizens aware against begging and to help the administration.
Efforts to end beggary
Dinesh Mishra, project officer of the Women and Child Development Department, said that in the last four months, about 400 people have been sent to shelter sites for rehabilitation, while 64 children have been sent to child care institutions. He said that during this period the administration has also launched an awareness campaign against beggary.
Now legal action will be taken against both the alms taker and the giver. Apart from this, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has started a pilot project to make 10 cities of the country beggar-free, which includes Indore.
